Kershaw founder Pete Kershaw understood how important guaranteed quality is. In late 1974, he decided to start his own knife company in a cement plant in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
In Japan, Kai CEO Koji Endo believed Kershaw had even greater growth potential. In 1996, Endo invested in an American manufacturing facility at Kai USA's Wilsonville headquarters. He believed this would help Kershaw reach its full potential. Soon after, Kai USA hired a new production team for the job.

With a blade measuring less than 2 inches, the Launch 9 may look like a smaller version of our best-selling Launch 2, but it has its own appeal. Its compact size makes it easy to carry—and useful in a variety of situations where you might not pull out a more aggressive-looking knife. The Launch 9 blade is made from the same upgraded materials as the rest of the Launch series and features a "working" finish—slightly rougher than a stonewashed finish to help hide the scuffs a working knife picks up during use.
