History and origin
The Matriarch 2 is based on the Spyderco Civilian, a knife designed for U.S. federal law enforcement as a discreet yet powerful defensive tool. The original Civilian, designed by Spyderco founder Sal Glesser, is known for its patented reverse “S” blade profile, which maximizes cutting potential. In the 1990s, Spyderco created a more affordable version that paired the Civilian blade with the FRN handle of the popular Endura model, resulting in the first Matriarch.
After the original Matriarch was discontinued, a limited “sprint” edition followed in 2010, which reignited interest in the design. This led to the introduction of the Matriarch 2, bringing a modern version with flat grinding and popular materials.
Construction and materials
The Matriarch 2 is built on the legendary Endura 4 design – it features skeletonized stainless steel liners that provide excellent strength at low weight.
