It has been speculated that the sheepfoot-shaped blade originated with sailors, who considered the rounded tip especially advantageous if a knife was accidentally dropped (imagine working on a boat in rough seas), because when it hit the deck it could not stab into a foot. It is also assumed that commanding officers on these ships preferred loud, hard-working sailors to carry knives without pointed tips, especially when in port, blowing off steam after months at sea.

Spyderco rescue knives have long been a favorite among sailors, and their design has since been adopted by rescuers, EMTs, and ranchers—anyone who needs to cut quickly and effectively in an emergency. The Atlantic Salt is now available in a corrosion-resistant version and is a modified Rescue made from state-of-the-art H1 steel. H1 is a precipitation-hardened steel containing nitrogen instead of carbon, making it incredibly corrosion resistant. The serrated, hollow-ground blade offers remarkable cutting performance in and around both fresh and salt water. The black injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle with Volcano Grip texture is equipped with an ambidextrous titanium pocket clip for right- or left-hand carry. We recommend threading a lanyard through the lanyard hole for backup retention around water, where a dropped knife is often unrecoverable or lost.
