The Spyderco ultra-fine ceramic sharpening stone is flat, thin, and ultra-smooth for professional finishing and sharpening of a wide range of tools, such as chisels, large blades, woodworking equipment, hand planes, and even ski and snowboard edges. Made from Alumina Ceramic, it is manufactured in the United States using a process in which a bonding agent is combined with aluminum oxide particles, which are essentially synthetic sapphires. The stone is shaped and then fired in a kiln at 3000 degrees F (1649 °C). Alumina oxide ceramic stones measure 9 on the Mohs hardness scale (out of 10) and do not require lubricants such as oil or water. The ultra-fine grit stretches and smooths the scratch pattern on the cutting edge for an even sharper, hair-popping edge. The stone is thin and lightweight enough for handheld use, while the sharpening surface is large enough for bigger items. For bench sharpening, we recommend using the stone on its suede carrying case to prevent slipping. To clean the stone, wash it in fresh water and scrub it with a powdered abrasive cleanser and a scouring pad. Rinse and air dry.
